CHICK-N-GO 2020

As we enter the fall of 2020 the Madison Lions Club (MS), organizes and carries out its annual Chick-N-Go fundraiser.  This being the largest fundraiser for the club, we take great care in planning each step of the way.

From the creation of the secret Voodoo Sauce to the placement of grilles and the assembly tables, our club members arrived early on Saturday, October 24, 2020, to take 850 chicken halves, a container of potato salad, one piece of corn on the cob, a roll, plus plastic utensils to generate money to serve others in Madison County.

One of our past Chick-N-Go projects helped fund over $4,000 of glasses needed by our fellow Madison citizens.  Another Chick-N-Go fundraiser provided an OptixPlus eye screening machine we used last year to scan over 900 children’s eyes as a pass or a referral to an eye specialist for further examination.

Well over forty of our club members and Metro Leos participate in the event.  And, yes, our Leos did not stand around and visit.  They were asking where they could help!

While we could list all of the names of our club members and how they helped, there are four individuals and one team that stand out.  First, there is Dick Largel.  He is the keeper of the recipe for the secret Voodoo Sauce.  He and his team set up the pots on top of propane burners.  Then begin to pour into the pots the ingredients in the prescribed amounts.  Once complete and the sauce has cooled, the final product is store in plastic bottles.

Second, Rusty Healy heads up the grill team.  Their work on Saturday begins at 5:45 am setting up the grills, distributing and lighting the charcoal, turning over the chickens for even cooking, applying the secret Voodoo Sauce, and finally checking the temperature of the chickens for health purposes.

The third is Stacey Philley.  She is responsible for the placement of tables for the assembly line.  Taking the individual items and ending with a plate that is packaged is something to watch.

Fourth, is James Wilkerson.  His responsibility is the cooking of the corn on the cob.  He and his team produced a delicious piece of corn on the cob for our customers.

And, last, but not least the team of Lions helped our customers receive the correct number of plates from the tickets they purchased.  As noon came closer, the line of vehicles increases to take home their plates.  So, directing traffic off Hwy. 51, through the delivery line and exiting the bank property is critical to a smooth, flowing process.

The final net dollars contributed to this fundraiser is still being tabulated.  But, we know soon we will have additional funds to help serve others in our community.

At our recent board of directors meeting, we discussed the successes of this Chick-N-Go and opportunities to streamlining our customer pick up area.

Our Lions Clubs International motto is:

                        WE SERVE.
