Helen Keller is a special and inspirational person in many, many ways One of those ways was the inspiring speech she gave at the 1925 Lions Club International Convention.
Her final paragraph as the guest speaker is as follows.
“The opportunity I bring you Lions is this. To foster and sponsor the work of the American Foundation for the Blind. Will you now help me hasten the day when there will be no preventable blindness, no little deaf-blind child untaught? No blind man or woman unaided? I appeal to you Lions, you who have your sight, your hearing. You who are strong and brave and kind. Will you not constitute yourself Knights of the Blind in this crusade against darkness?” I thank you.
The motion was then made to make Helen Keller an honorary member of Lions Clubs. Every member there seconded the motion.
Every June 1st many people, inspired by Helen Keller’s life and example, celebrate her birthday.
